Rare Mastiff Dog Breeds

There are many types of Mastiffs. This list includes brief descriptions of some of the rare Mastiff dog breeds.

Fila Mastiff

Also called the Brazilian Mastiff, this breed was used as a guard dog, hunting companion and as a shepherd.

During a hunt, it was known for not damaging the prey, instead holding it for the hunter. They make excellent guard dogs, but it is absolutely imperative that they are properly trained and socialized when young.

They tend to be wary of strangers and failure to socialize when puppies can lead to aggressive behavior.

Colors include fawn, red and brindle. The coats are short and little grooming is required.

Pyrenean Mastiff

This is one of the rare Mastiff dog breeds that has become more well known in the United States over the last several years.

This dog was originally bred to guard livestock in the mountains.

Weighing in at up to 220 pounds, this is a gentle giant who is very good with children, other pets and even strangers. When needed, however, the Pyrenean Mastiff will leap into action to defend its family.

The long coat requires daily brushing. This dog requires less exercise than some other Mastiff breeds, but it does need some activity.

Perro De Presa Canario

Originally bred in the Canary Islands for use as cattle dogs, this breed has garnered a bad reputation in recent years due to irresponsible owners.

The truth is that this is a dog that requires early and consistent training.

The owner must become and remain dominant in order to stave off undesirable traits including aggressiveness.

Males weigh between 100 and 140 pounds. Females weigh in at 85 to 120 pounds. The coats of this rare Mastiff dog breed are short and, because there is no undercoat, they do not shed.

The most common colors are fawn and brindle and they have a black mask. This breed is also known for its catlike movements despite its very large size.

Boerboel Mastiff

Like other Mastiff breeds, the Boerboel was bred with a working purpose in mind: to guard the property of its owners.

Originating in South Africa, this dog is still bred there and exported to other parts of the world.

In addition to guard duty, Boerboels have been used in hunting. They are very courageous and fiercely loyal to their owners.

Weighing in at 110 to 175 pounds this is a large dog that can easily provide protection to the right owner. They come in many colors including fawn, red, brown, black. Some will have a mask; others will not.

This breed is energetic and good with children when properly trained.

Adronicus Mastiff

The Adronicus Mastiff is a very rare Mastiff dog breed originated in California. The breeder is protective of information about the types of dogs used in creating it.

The dogs have a large head and strong jaws. The males weigh 100 to 140 pounds and the smaller females tip the scales at 80 to 100 pounds.

Kumaon Mastiff

Originally bred in the Kumaon Hills of India as a watchdog, only about 150 of the dogs remain in that area. The dog is large and muscular with an imposing head and aggressive disposition.

Proper training is vital to prevent the dog from being aggressive. While this dog is very rare in the Kumaon Hills, there are more examples of this breed in various parts of Europe.

One thing that all rare Mastiff dog breeds have in common is that they require a particular type of owner.

Anyone who chooses this type of dog should have experience with dogs, knowledge of canine instinct and the ability and willingness to properly train and socialize the dog.
